Para la novena temporada de Smallville. Tom Welling, Allison Mack, Erica Durance, Cassidy Freeman, Callum Blue, y Justin Hartley aparecerán como personajes regulares.
Hasta ahora se sabe que Erica Durance estará en 18 episodios, también que un nuevo villano de DC Comics se verá en esta temporada, Metallo, interpretado por Brian Austin Green en al menos dos episodios. Estará en la premier de temporada y en el segundo capítulo titulado "Metallo". Cassidy Freeman, Callum Blue, y Justin Hartley aparecerán por 16 episodios; y Tom y Allison estarán en los 22. Ambos volverán a dirigir esta temporada. En cuanto a spoilers, Clark va a usar un traje este año, aunque será negro y no tendra capa, y usará una gabardina. También habrá romance entre Clark, Lois y el borron rojiazul. Una chica llamada Alia que es de Krypton aparecerá en la premier de la temporada y ayudara a Clark. Otra llamada Fiona integrará el lado de Zod y será una villana. Las 2 serán recurrentes. Lois regresará del lugar en el que se encontraba y tendra visiones del futuro en el que ve que Clark provoca el fin del mundo... El villano de esta temporada será Zod, en un cuerpo humano y lo veremos antes de convertirse en General, pero será traicionado por alguien y se convertirá en el terrible villano conocido por todos. También volverá Toyman y aparecerán los Gemelos Fantásticos Zan y Jayna, y Roulette. Geoff Jones (de la Legion) escribirá un capítulo basado en la Sociedad de la Justicia y se llamara Society, además que será el regreso de Kristin Kreuk como Lana Lang y se estará transmitiendo en enero del 2010.
